AP Mobile now delivers LatAm local news stories from Grupo de Diarios América

NEW YORK – Local news stories from six leading Latin America newspapers are now being delivered by The Associated Press across the popular AP Mobile news network. Through a content distribution deal that AP struck with Grupo de Diarios América (GDA), newly added to the roster of AP Mobile news providers are regional newspapers such as: El Tiempo (Colombia), La Nación (Costa Rica), El Comercio (Ecuador), El Nuevo Día (Puerto Rico), El País (Uruguay), and El Nacional (Venezuela). AP Móvil features regional, national and world news from AP and Latin American and Caribbean content from participating media organizations.

With an audience that exceeds 6 million daily readers and 10 million on Sundays, the GDA represents one of the largest newspaper audiences in Latin America. The content can be found in the Latin America section of AP Mobile and on new AP Móvil widgets and apps for Latin America to be launched in the coming months in English, Spanish and Portuguese languages.

“Teaming up with GDA bolsters our efforts to provide consumers local stories in their local languages, creating an international footprint for mobile news across today’s most popular phones and wireless devices," said Jeff Litvack, AP’s general manager of mobile and emerging products. “On any given day, AP Mobile gives mobile news readers access to more than 18,000 local stories from around the globe, and we’re excited to bring GDA into the mix.”

“This partnership demonstrates the evolution that content is having nowadays,” said Luis Fernando Santos, president of the GDA and president of publishing company Casa Editorial El Tiempo in Colombia. “We view this as a fantastic opportunity to deliver the best content in quantity and quality to the AP Mobile network so everyone interested in the region can be better informed, supporting our mission to position GDA member newspapers as the best source of news and information for Latin America.”

AP first announced Latin America mobile expansion plans in November 2009 at the IAPA general assembly in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Timing of this announcement coincides with the mid-year meeting of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA). IAPA attendees can demo the AP Mobile apps by visiting the AP booth #6 at The Westin Resort in Aruba.

"This is a prime example of how the news industry is collaborating to better serve consumers on new and upcoming platforms," said Sue Cross, AP’s senior vice president for business development and partner relations for the Americas. “Latin American and Caribbean media partners can make their news available to both local audiences and those in other countries via AP Mobile.”

There are a number of ways for consumers to access GDA stories via AP Mobile:
• AP Mobile en Español app for the BlackBerry available to users via BlackBerry App World.
• AP Mobile apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch, Palm WebOS devices, Android and Nokia S60 devices – select América Latina as your region.
• AP Mobile en Espanol WAP site – www.es.apnews.com
• Future AP Movíl (AP Mobile in Brazil) apps and widgets will be launched this quarter, visit www.getapmobile.com for updates.

AP first entered the international market last year with the launch of French and English language versions of The Canadian Press Mobile. Following that, the AP Mobile team developed AP Mobile en Español featuring U.S. Spanish language news in two versions – as a dedicated news category channel for the AP Mobile iPhone application and as a standalone application available for download on BlackBerry App World.
