wins two Sigma Delta Chi awards, for breaking news photography
and sports column writing
NEW YORK -- The Associated Press has been named winner of
the Society of Professional Journalists' 2005 Sigma Delta
Chi award for breaking news photography for coverage of Hurricane
Katrina, and taken the top spot in the writing category for
sports columns.
Cited were a series of images produced by an eleven-member
team which included staff photographers Rick Bowmer of Portland,
Ore.; Robb Carr of Montgomery, Ala.; Mel Evans, of Trenton,
N.J.; Eric Gay of San Antonio; Bill Haber of New Orleans;
Regional Photo Editor-South Dave Martin of Atlanta; David
J. Phillip of Houston, Donna McWilliam of Dallas; and Susan
Walsh of Washington, D.C., and freelancers Mari Darr-Welch
and Ben Sklar.
Las Vegas-based sports writer Tim Dahlberg won first place
in the sports column category. The award recognizes a columnist
who regularly writes about sports.
